Cyclothymic Disorder

INTRODUCTION:

Cyclothymic disorder is also known as cyclothymic. This is a mental illness in which there are episodes of hypomania and depression. You can claim that if there are episodes of high and low emotions, it is not called bipolar disorder. There is a clear demarcation between them. The demarcation is that the episodes are not that frequent, and along with this, the episodes are not as hypermanic as in bipolar. They are hypomanic and depressive episodes. It affects the daily life of the person. Mood changes are not as high as they are observed in bipolar, but yes, they interfere with the person’s emotional and physical well-being. Mood swings can persist for two years, and they can affect people of all ages. We have to understand that early detection can help a person live a healthy, happy, and grateful life. There are numerous causes for which a person can be prone to mental illness. Genetics plays an important role in it, and environmental factors also play a crucial role in it. CAUSES

 There are many causes for cyclothymic disorder. There is a wide range of causes, starting from genetically programmed diseases to environmental factors. We can’t figure out the one known reason for this mental illness. Every factor played a role in causing this disease and even making it worse.

Biological: Biological changes mean if the family has a history of mental illness, the offspring or the new generation is more likely to get this disease from the genes. It is still unknown which gene is responsible for the way it transfers from one family member to another because there is a direct link between the genes.

Neurochemical: An imbalanced neurotransmitter can cause this disease. Abnormalities in neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine

Brain structure: There is a functional part of the brain that controls the mood of a human. It is observed that if a person has persistent mood changes, there is something bad in the brain.

Traumatic events and childhood bad situations: This can cause this mental illness, and being continuously confronted with these situations can make the mental illness worse.

Personality trait: People who fall for perfectionism are more prone to this. They want everything to be perfect, which is why they fall into the trap of depressive episodes.

Environment: A healthy environment breeds people with love and care; similarly, a toxic environment breeds people with hate and negative emotions, which results in mental illness.

SYMTPOMS:

Symptoms of hypomania: Individuals may experience the following symptoms during hypomanic phases:

  • Mood elevation or irritation
  • Increased activity and vigour.
  • Overconfidence and a reduced need for sleep
  • Talkativeness and racing ideas
  • Increased goal-directed or dangerous conduct.

Symptoms of depression: Depressive symptoms include:

  • Sadness or hopelessness persists.
  • Reduced enjoyment or interest in activities.
  • Fatigue and a lack of energy
  • Appetite or weight change
  • Insomnia or oversleeping are examples of sleep problems.
  • Feelings of inadequacy or undue guilt
  • Difficulties focusing and making judgements.
  • Suicidal or suicidal ideation, however less severe than in serious depression,

Fluctuations in Mood: Cyclothymic is distinguished by the persistence of these mood fluctuations for at least two years (one year in teenagers) in adults. These changes frequently make it difficult to sustain solid relationships and secure work.

TREATMENT

 Treatment of the early symptoms helps a person get back to a healthy and happy life because this mental illness affects a person’s personality and their work life. Their emotional side also suffered a lot, and they love to make themselves isolated because being confronted with people makes them more vulnerable to depressive episodes.

Psychotherapy: There are numerous therapies that help people maintain healthy emotional stability.

Diet: Junk food and unhealthy food make people feel guilty after having them. Healthy food makes people satisfied with their lives and makes them love themselves.

Healthy lifestyle: Running, yoga, and a good social group are the key factors that improve the health of a person.

Schedule: Everything should be on the calendar. It is totally impossible for us to rush from one task to another without having the proper schedule.

Coping skills: love to have a good sports day within a week.

Strong social support: A healthy and happy family helps a person live a happy life. This will make a patient feel more worthless.

Awareness: Acknowledging a mental illness is very crucial for its speedy recovery.

Long process: We must appreciate that the recovery process is long. We must have patience because the chaos won’t be figured out in a day. It took long and continuous efforts.
