Mental Health First Aid: How to Recognize and Support Others

WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH

The WHO states that mental health is “more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities.” Peak mental health is not only about managing active conditions but also looking after ongoing wellness and happiness. The World Health Organization also celebrates Mental Health Day, which shows how important it is for us to monitor our overall health. We only think that being physically active means that the person is healthy, but the reality is contradictory. People still don’t give importance to mental health, even though it is very important. Can you hire a well-educated man with a psychological disorder? We knew the answer. The so-called well-educated man won’t do work in a productive way. This example shows that being mentally fit is crucial for a person and for his whole society.

FACTORS WHICH LEAD TO MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE

Mental health issues won’t arise accidentally. There is a chain of actions and situations that lead a person into the vicious cycle of mental health issues. Some people won’t be able to cope with the trauma or situation and will fall into mental health issues. Few people who want to overcome the issue opt for drugs. Which worsens the situation in the long term.

  • Childhood trauma: The first years of human life are crucial for a baby. During this time, a child learns many basic things that will be with him for the rest of his life. If a child is fed violence at an early age, he will do the same because this is what he is taught in his initial years. Sexual abuse is a very common example that makes a human emotionally unwell, which can lead to many mental health issues.
  • Toxic Environment: The family environment is the first and foremost environment with which a child comes into contact. If a person is habitual of seeing violence, this is the same thing that he will replicate and think is the only way to get things done. The environment taught people most of these things. This will make a person happy or sad. Where a person is working is also another important part of life. Is the person is getting enough respect, or is he the prey of many societal dilemmas?
  • Genetics: There are many mental disorders that run from family to family due to the same genes. A few diseases are also present in your genes. These kinds of diseases can be prevented by taking extra care of yourself.
  • Lifestyle: Smoking, drugs, and alcohol disturb the body’s homeostatic balance. This leads to mental health issues as these kinds of things indirectly affect hormones. Disturbances in hormones will affect overall health.

BENEFITS OF HAVING GOOD MENTAL HEALTH

  • Positive self-image:  Good Mental Health blesses you with a positive self-image. A person with a positive self-image attracts people because they love to be with confident people. Indirectly, having a positive self-image will make you a social star.
  • Good coping mechanism: Life is composed of ups and downs. There are days of tears and days of cheers. In this case, people need to have a solid coping mechanism. Good mental health makes people resilient to all life’s events, and in this way, a person propels in the best way.
  • High productivity: A calm mind is the best asset because it works well in every kind of situation. Every minute of your life is productive. We all have 24 hours, but successful people make the most of them. This is the rule of productivity: a person uses every second of his life to make it worthwhile.
  • Best quality of life: Quality of life is very important because people want peace in their lives. This will happen only when you have good mental health and know the logic behind a thing.

HEALTHY REALTIONSHIP

A human is an emotional being. This means that humans have to connect with other people because this is crucial to their nature. It is impossible for a human to isolate himself and live his best life. We all depend on each other, directly or indirectly. We can’t perform all the tasks by ourselves. This seems impossible for a human to do everything in a perfect way. This is beauty. Every individual is different and blessed with different talents, which makes the human race depend on each other. This is the importance of relationships. Relationships do not only cover family terms. It includes relationships with colleagues, bosses, and other people. The person who has sustainable mental health will perform well in relationships and be able to maintain purposeful relationships.

MAINTAIN YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

  • Exercise: Exercise is the cheapest and most effective way to make your life beautiful. Being healthy will make your life more productive. A healthy person will be able to do work and enjoy every moment of life. Even for mental health, doctors recommend exercise because it releases happy hormones, which make people happy. This thing will relieve the symptoms of mental health.
  • Yoga: Yoga is a traditional way to stay in shape. This helps muscles to be movable and stretchable. This causes us to transport a good amount of oxygen to our brain. The more our brain gets oxygen, the more it is beneficial for human health.
  • Meditation: Meditation is crucial, not only for mental health but for overall health. Our brains are bombarded with thousands of thoughts every time. This will relax and refresh your mind. This also increases productivity.
  • Me time: Our to-do list is not going to be finished because we are very used to adding everything to our 24-hour schedule. We forget that we are the most important part of our lives. It is important to be organized, but there should be blocks of time where you think about yourself and practice self-care, which is self-love.

MENTAL HEALTH TABOO

Mental health is still taboo. We are all human beings, just as our other organs can suffer, and similarly, our brain can also. Our brains also need treatment the way other organs do, but the reality is different. People think that going to a psychologist will make a mark on their personalities. Most people know the symptoms of mental health issues, and they know they are facing them. Their lives are suffering; they are suffering, but they are not going to health care professionals to get treatment. Sometimes issues get worse, and a person needs medication along with therapies. If a person with the worst kind of symptoms is neglecting everything, this will make him suffer more. This is not a threat to his life only because this thing will make the people around him suffer. Mostly the loved ones

CONCLUSION

The community as a whole will do wonders if they have a keen eye on the mental health of their individuals. Many problems can be solved only by listening. If a person is listened to carefully with full attention, they will cope up fast compared to a person who is ignored by everyone. A healthy community where respect is given is the key feature to eradicating the mental health issue. The purpose of being understood is to get rid of these issues, which are life-threatening.
